October 7th - 11th, 2024
Annual Liberal Arts Intensive Course
Ages 11-14, and 14-18
The week long intensive course includes Philosophy, Literature, and Theology, and for the junior stream, Art as well. Our teachers are Ben and Eliza McCabe from the Augustine Academy in New South Wales, where they specialise in cultivating a love of learning, and preparing their students for university through a formation in liberal arts. Ben and Eliza are supported by local teachers Stephen and Jacinta Woodnutt, who are both graduates of Campion College, an Australian Liberal Arts university.
Content

Content of the Intensive will include Philosophy, Literature, and Theology, and for the Junior stream, Art as well. The location will be St Patrick's School in Kaiapoi. An improvement over last year is that since we will be running the course in the school holidays we will have access to the classrooms for teaching sessions, and to the play areas for breaks.
Students/Target Audience

The target audience is school-aged students/young adults, and like last time, participants will be split into two streams, Junior and Senior. Material in the Junior stream will be aimed at students aged around 11 to 14 years. The Senior stream will be aimed at students aged around 14 to 18 years.
Teachers/Facilitators

Our teachers will again be Ben and Eliza McCabe from the Augustine Academy in New South Wales, where they specialise in cultivating a love of learning, and preparing their students for university through a formation in liberal arts. Ben and Eliza will be supported by local teachers Stephen and Jacinta Woodnutt, who are both graduates of Campion College, an Australian Liberal Arts university.
Koha

We will be asking for a koha/donation from participants, of $100 for every first student in a family, and $50 for any additional students from the same family. This koha will not actually cover costs so we are relying on additional donations to help us provide the event. However if the suggested koha will be burdensome to your family but you would still like to participate, let us know that as well, and we will try to provide some assistance.
An important part of our mission is to make access to a liberal arts education more affordable, so if you feel moved to contribute more or to become a regular donor to our work please let us know. We are a registered Charitable Trust now, so we can provide tax receipts to donors.
What's next?

We will send out more information over the coming weeks leading up to the Intensive. This will include a timetable, what to bring, and more details about course content. Note that we intend to target our communications at parents of students rather than students themselves.
There will be several hours of reading material for students to work through prior to the course. This is not something that can be left to the last minute, and it is a prerequisite for attendance. We will be sending this out from the first week of September to people who are registered by then, so it is everyone's interest to plan ahead!
